Unveiling a Historic Treasure

Coming to Auction XXXII in October 2024: The Extremely Rare 103rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Bombay Fusiliers) Regimental Colors

A rare and remarkable piece of British military history is making its way to Auction XXXII in October 2024— the Regimental Colors of the illustrious 103rd Regiment of Foot, also known as the Royal Bombay Fusiliers. This artifact symbolizes centuries of valor, loyalty, and service, from the Victorian era to pivotal moments in British colonial military campaigns.

Born from the transfer of Bombay to British hands as part of Catherine of Braganza’s dowry to King Charles II in 1661, the regiment’s legacy stretches across continents. Formed initially to garrison Bombay, it evolved into the 1st Bombay Regiment under the East India Company. Over decades, it carved a storied path in battles of global importance. From victories in the Second Carnatic War, where it faced French and Indian forces, to the historic triumph at the Battle of Plassey in Bengal, the regiment’s history reflects the broader struggle for dominance in 18th century India.

The regiment’s bravery was displayed again during the Maratha Wars, and it solidified its legendary status in the Third Mysore War. These milestones reflect a regiment that was present at every defining chapter of Britain’s expanding influence in the East.

In 1844, as a testament to its elevated status, the regiment earned the title of fusiliers, becoming the 1st Bombay (European) Regiment. It continued to serve with distinction during the Second Sikh War and the Indian Mutiny, cementing its place in military history. The regiment’s formal inclusion into the British Army came in 1862, when it was rebranded as the 103rd Regiment of Foot. It received royal recognition in 1871 when Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Arthur, presented it with new Colors on the Isle of Wight—a proud moment immortalized in regimental lore.

Merging in 1881 to become part of The Royal Dublin Fusiliers, the 103rd Regiment’s legacy lives on. The rare Regimental Colors now available at auction offer collectors the opportunity to own a tangible piece of this history. With their vivid stories of battle, honor, and heritage, these Colors are more than just relics; they are symbols of an era that shaped the modern world.
